Breadmaking in Winter
While I have learned to like winter so much more in recent years, we recently had close to a two-week stretch with no sun here in southern Maine. The lack of sun eventually started to get to me, but I am grateful to say the sun has returned. When I felt a bit unmoored by the gloom, a bit down and listless, I turned to breadmaking as a grounding activity: something that would get me out of my head and into my body: mixing and kneading and engaging all my senses. Even better, it was a way to do something for someone else, a way to bless my family when I was feeling a bit low. My daughters and husband go crazy for homemade bread these days, and with good reason. There is no adequate replacement for homemade bread. Nothing quite compares.
While I know sourdough is having a major moment, and I love sourdough, I have yet to master a sourdough recipe, so let me share with you the two recipes I am currently making on repeat.
If the winter gets you in a slump, try the hyggely comfort of bread making for a full-sensory pick-me-up. I’ve never regretted taking the time to make bread for my family and friends.
